Website Maintenance

Website maintenance services that catch problems before your customers do

Nothing breaks quietlyon a site someone is watching.

Monthly care for websites that bring in business, whoever built them. Updates, security, backups, uptime, speed and form testing, plus the content changes you keep meaning to make, with a plain report of what was done.

How websites decay

Most website failures are silent for weeks.

A website does not stay finished. The software underneath it keeps changing: content management systems, themes and plugins release updates, some of them security fixes, some of them breaking changes. Hosting environments get upgraded. Certificates expire. Third-party scripts for chat, booking or tracking change without notice. Each of these can take down a form, slow a page or open a door to attackers.

The expensive part is that you rarely find out. A contact form that stops sending does not show an error to the visitor, it just loses the enquiry. A plugin conflict might only break the mobile menu. A hacked site may redirect visitors from Google while looking normal to you. By the time a customer mentions it or rankings slip, the damage is done.

What maintenance really covers

A plain guide to keeping a business website healthy.

Website maintenance is the routine work that keeps a site secure, fast and working. It is different from marketing work that grows the site, and a good plan makes the line between the two clear.

What does website maintenance include?

The core is software updates, security monitoring, backups, uptime monitoring, performance checks and fixing anything that breaks. Good plans add functional testing: actually submitting forms, clicking call buttons and checking that booking widgets and tracking still fire. Most also include a set amount of time for content edits such as new photos, staff changes or updated offers. Reporting ties it together so you can see what was done. Growth work like SEO campaigns, new pages or redesigns is usually scoped separately, and a clear plan says so up front.

How often should a website be maintained?

Different tasks run on different rhythms. Backups and security scans should run daily, automatically. Uptime monitoring runs continuously, with alerts. Software updates are best applied at least monthly, and immediately when a security patch is released for something you use. Forms, speed and broken links are worth checking monthly. Every quarter, it pays to test that a backup actually restores, review accessibility and look at which plugins or scripts are no longer needed. Sites with online payments or heavy traffic need closer attention than a simple brochure site.

Why test updates on staging first?

Updating plugins directly on a live site is how most self-inflicted outages happen. One update conflicts with another, a theme stops displaying correctly or a form plugin changes how it sends email. A staging site is a private copy of your website where updates are applied and checked first. If something breaks there, it is fixed or the update is held back, and your customers never see it. Only once the staging copy is working are the same updates applied to the live site, with a fresh backup taken just before.

What is the risk of an unmaintained website?

Outdated plugins and themes are among the most common ways small business websites get compromised. Attackers scan the web automatically for known weaknesses, so a site does not need to be well known to be targeted. A compromised site can send visitors to spam, get flagged by browsers and search engines, or leak form submissions. Beyond security, unmaintained sites slow down, lose features as integrations change and quietly break forms. Each of these costs enquiries long before anyone notices a problem.

Website maintenance or website management?

Maintenance keeps the site you have working: secure, backed up, updated, fast and accurate. Management goes further and treats the site as a growth channel, with ongoing SEO, new landing pages, conversion testing and content. Many businesses need maintenance only. Others, especially those running ads or competing hard in local search, benefit from both. Capture Marketing offers maintenance on its own and can add search or conversion work later if the site needs to do more than stay healthy.

Maintenance in our four niches

What breaking means is different in every industry.

Construction and trades

For a contractor, the website is often where a homeowner sends a quote request at night after seeing your truck. If that form fails, the job goes to the next result. We test quote forms and click-to-call buttons every month, keep project galleries loading fast on phones, and add new project photos as you send them so the site shows current work.

Medical and aesthetics

Clinic websites connect to booking systems and intake forms that handle personal health information, so security and form routing matter more than on most sites. We keep software patched, check that forms and bookings reach the right inbox, keep practitioner lists and hours current, and flag any page wording that may need review against your regulatory college's advertising standards.

Real estate and development

Builder and brokerage sites change constantly: new projects, sold-out phases, price lists, floor plans and listing feeds. We update project pages, swap renderings and documents, keep registration forms connected to your CRM and make sure listing integrations still pull through after platform changes, so buyers never land on outdated information or a broken sign-up form.

Professional services

Law, accounting and financial firms are judged on credibility, so a broken page or a security warning does real damage. We keep the site patched and certificates valid, update people pages as staff join and leave, publish articles you write, and keep consultation and document request forms secure and working, with spam filtering that does not block real clients.

A month of website care

The checks we run every month so you never have to.

Updates tested on staging

Core, theme and plugin updates applied to a private copy first, then to the live site once they check out.

Security monitoring

Daily malware scans, login protection, certificate checks and immediate patching of known vulnerabilities.

Backups that are tested

Daily off-site backups kept for weeks, with periodic test restores so we know they work when needed.

Uptime and speed watch

Continuous uptime alerts and monthly mobile speed checks, with fixes when pages slow down.

Forms and tracking tested

Real test submissions on every form, call button and booking widget, and a check that analytics still records them.

Content edits on request

Photos, staff, hours, offers and copy changes made by people who know your site, within an agreed amount of time each month.

FAQ

Website Maintenance, your questions answered.

Straight answers on contracts, pricing, ownership and how we work.

Ask us on a call
Can you maintain a website someone else built?+

Yes. Most of the sites we maintain were built elsewhere. We start with a health check of the hosting, software, security and forms, fix anything urgent, set up backups and monitoring, and then maintain it like our own. WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Squarespace and most custom-coded sites can be taken over, provided you can grant access to the hosting and domain.

What happens if my website gets hacked?+

We restore it from a clean backup, find and close the weakness that let the attacker in, change credentials and check that search engines and browsers are not flagging the site. You get a written summary of what happened. Sites under maintenance are much less likely to be compromised in the first place, because known vulnerabilities are patched as soon as fixes are released.

Is hosting included in website maintenance?+

It can be. We can move your site to managed hosting we recommend, or maintain it where it already lives if the host is reliable. Either way the hosting account and domain stay registered in your name, so you are never dependent on us to keep the site online. If your current host is slow or unreliable, the health check will show it and we will explain the options.

Do I need maintenance if my site is on Shopify or Squarespace?+

You need less of it. Hosted platforms handle core software and server security for you. What still needs attention is everything you add: apps and integrations that change or break, forms and booking tools, tracking, speed, broken links and content that goes out of date. A lighter maintenance plan covers those without paying for work the platform already does.

How quickly do you respond if the site goes down?+

Uptime monitoring alerts our team automatically when the site stops responding, usually before you or your customers notice. We investigate right away during business hours and restore service as quickly as the cause allows, whether that is a hosting outage, an expired certificate or a faulty update. You hear from us with an explanation once it is resolved.
